Job Summary

The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a joint academic department with reporting lines to the College of Engineering and the Medical School.  The dual-school environment includes a growing faculty roster within both schools, a large and increasing collaborative research portfolio, multi-building research facilities, innovative instructional programs at all academic levels, and a focus on research translation and entrepreneurship. BME is pursuing strategic goals to establish enhanced connections within and beyond both schools.  By launching shared facility cores to enable faculty success in research and providing an educational experience for undergraduate students through Ph.D. candidates, BME strives to best prepare graduates for the multitude of career options at the interface of engineering, life sciences, and medicine.

BME is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Academic HR Specialist to join our human resources team. This role is pivotal for supporting faculty and academic affairs in all aspects of human resource management, ensuring compliance with university policies and regulations, and fostering a productive and supportive academic environment.

Responsibilities*

  • Manage the annual faculty search process for Michigan Engineering and Michigan Medicine. This includes providing search committee support, managing milestones and communications, arranging candidate visits, managing casebooks, and coordinating related hiring processes.
  • Partner with college and medical school staff to manage timelines regarding faculty affairs across the department.
  • Support LEO process including hiring, reviews and major reviews working with BME HR to ensure LEO compliance.
  • Manage the annual promotion and tenure process and coordinating related systems, including creating casebooks and providing committee support.
  • Prepare and distribute faculty merit letters, prepare retirement memoirs, and manage retirement announcements.
  • Support department HR and leadership to ensure that all HR paperwork is reviewed by the Chairs Office to meet college, medical school and university deadlines, specifically sabbatical process, modified duties request, joint and courtesy appointments requests, and coordinate with ADAA/OFA and BME HR for approval and final processing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business field or an equivalent amount of experience and education 4+ years of progressively responsible administrative experience in an academic environment. 
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously without compromising quality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a keen eye for grammatical and typographical accuracy.  Able to discern appropriate communication modes at all levels of the organization. Highly developed interpersonal skills to represent the department with confidential matters.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to identify, analyze, and correct errors promptly.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion in responding to requests for information. 
  • Able to use initiative to identify where changes are needed and make appropriate recommendations. Willing to participate in project work to improve administrative systems.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • SHRM Certification
  • Previous experience working in an academic or student services environment.
