The Assistant Controller is the leader of the accounting team for the brick and mortar retail channel, and is a business partner to brick and mortar retail operations. The position requires a strong leader who is committed to delivering best-in-class support that is accurate, timely, and data-driven.
This position is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day financial accounting of the brick and mortar retail business. In addition to delivering accurate and timely monthly financial statements, the Assistant Controller will ensure adherence to established internal controls and accounting policies, while also identifying and driving opportunities to enhance scalability and support sustained growth.
This position requires a strong understanding of business processes and systematic data workflows, and therefore the Assistant Controller should be a power user of the accounting system.
Finally, as a business partner, this role should have strong communication skills, and should collaborate well cross-functionally within accounting and retail operations.

Responsibilities
- Lead a team of accountants dedicated to supporting accounting for 85 retail locations
- Handle day-to-day individual contributor responsibilities for the brick and mortar business unit, including sales and cash reconciliation for a small group of designated stores
- Deliver accurate and timely monthly financial statements for the consolidated brick and mortar business unit
- Perform detailed review of supporting work papers, and improve documented support
- Perform monthly variance analysis and other commentary for the balance sheet and income statement of the brick and mortar business unit
- Ensure adherence to established business processes for store operations, and improve internal controls as needed
- Partner with the retail operations team to empower the brick and mortar business to achieve its financial goals
- Leverage systems to ensure scalability and sustained growth for a growing retail business
- Work closely with other finance and accounting functions (FP&A, AP, AR) to ensure shared success
- Coordinate the preparation, review, and validation of key financial estimates as needed
- Provide support to external auditors as needed for annual audit

Qualifications
- Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting
- CPA license preferred
- 5-7 years of experience in an accounting role, retail experience a plus
- Strong understanding of standard concepts, practices, and procedures of GAAP accounting
- Strong analytical skills, financial acumen, and judgment
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- High attention to detail
- Deadline driven, flexible, and adaptable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with Oracle NetSuite a plus

Additional Requirements: Position requires occasional moving around with light (1-10lbs.) carrying, lifting, pushing or pulling. The position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access files, office equipment, etc. The position is mostly sedentary and requires the employee to have close visual acuity to perform job requirements. The position requires frequent communication with team members and repetitive motion with the hands, wrists and/or fingers while constantly utilizing a computer. This position is located within an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
