Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):


Ph.D., Ed.D, or equivalent academic terminal degree from an accredited university and five years of full time experience with increasing administrative responsibility in student success or academic advising at a college or university or Master's from an accredited university and eight years of full time experience with increasing administrative responsibility in student success or academic advising at a college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:
Professional experience at an AAU or large public research university. Demonstrated ability to use data to inform strategic decision-making and planning. Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change. Experience with advising technologies and/or student success platforms. Experience in budget management and planning. Professional or scholarly activities represented by conference participation, grant writing, publishing, or public engagement.

Brief Description of Duties:
Reporting to the Senior Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Provost for Academic Advising is the academic advising leader within Undergraduate Education, responsible for the advising strategy and coordination for approximately 18,000 undergraduates. The Assistant Provost provides oversight for several academic advising units; collaborates closely with advising stakeholders, including departmental/major advisors; and is expected to design and implement an ambitious advising strategy for improving undergraduate student retention and graduation.

As a senior member of the Division of Undergraduate Education, the Assistant Provost will represent the Division on all matters related to academic advising, support a culture of data-driven decision-making, align structures and systems with best practices, and develop innovative approaches to improve student outcomes. This includes leading and/or collaborating on efforts around course availability, undergraduate academic policies and procedures, general education requirements, and academic exceptions. The incumbent is responsible for advisor hiring, development, and engagement; advising technology; budget management; and strategic planning. The successful candidate must be able to listen and communicate effectively and collaboratively; be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and solution-focused; delegate effectively and provide strong mentoring to large teams; and be willing to think creatively and flexibly across complex processes.

Strategic Leadership:
  • Provide overall leadership, vision, and short- and long-term strategic direction to academic advising units within the Division of Undergraduate Education to ensure the delivery of high-quality advising services.
  • Develop, revise, and implement advising policies and procedures in accordance with university guidelines and best practices; identifies operational gaps and implements improvements.
  • Oversee the development, evaluation, and continuous improvement of student-centered academic advising practices and policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness to inform data collection and analysis that support priorities and initiatives within the Division of Undergraduate Education.
  • Represent the university in professional organizations and conferences related to academic advising and student success.
  • Prepare and present reports on advising outcomes, challenges, and strategic initiatives

Advising Coordination:
  • Serve as the liaison with academic departments, administrative units, and schools/colleges to coordinate advising-related success efforts to support student outcomes, as well as overall student engagement and satisfaction with services.
  • Act as a resource expert on all matters related to undergraduate academic advising and advising-based interventions.
  • Provide guidance and advocacy regarding students who have complex academic advising situations.
  • Coordinate all university and divisional level advising communications.
  • Convene the Advising Leadership Council for all advising stakeholders throughout the campus.

Management and Operations:
  • Supervise and mentor unit-level directors and support personnel.
  • Set and evaluate performance goals for direct reports. Develop and implement training plans, professional development, and a career ladder for professional advisors.
  • Manage the development and delivery of advising tools and resources, including advising technology platforms and advising policy materials.
  • Oversee budget planning and management.

Divisional Leadership and Support:
  • Chair and participate in a variety of teams in support of academic advising and student success.
  • Represent the Division of Undergraduate Education on university-level committees.
  • Assist the Senior Associate Provost with Division of Undergraduate Education priorities, including addressing barriers to student success.

Other duties or projects as assigned and appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time Management Confidential position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Salary: $140,000 - $150,000
