National Grid's Graduate Development Program (GDP) is a year-long development program for recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates will shape the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives, and exploring with energy, we'll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to move with purpose from day one - putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth 3-week in-person Orientation which gives you exposure to all parts of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, you'll begin working in full-time position outlined below and take part in ongoing development activities including quarterly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Hackathon Project.

About the Position

As an Associate Engineer, you will develop solutions, reports, and design documents to support our substation modifications and construction projects. Our Substations range from 4.8 kV distribution substations up to 345 kV transmission projects. These projects include modifications to existing sites as well as new substation builds.

This is a hybrid role with occasional travel required to National Grid substation work sites. The team is open to a work location of either Syracuse, NY or Buffalo, NY.

What You'll Do

In this position, you will work with different engineers and designers to meet project deliverables.

You will:

  • Perform preliminary engineering evaluations, develop project scope and schedule to support business strategy and capital investments.
  • Perform engineering calculations and studies to support project scope.
  • Provide support to project managers and the overall project delivery process to deliver project assignments.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of technical challenges, investigative findings, and recommended solutions.
  • Interface with internal design staff on construction document development.
  • Review drawings associated with projects, including manufacturers' equipment.
  • Manage (with assistance) consultant contracted work, ensuring compliance and technical adequacy meets company standards and project scope.
  • Participate in the development of standards and procedures.
  • Support construction and project closeout activities.

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited institution
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.).
  • Coursework related to three-phase AC power, transformers, and electrical machines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Graduated between May 2024 and June 2025
  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program on June 2, 2025 or July 7, 2025
  • Valid driver's license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (such as sponsorship for an H-1B, TN, O, L, STEM OPT, or other employment-based work authorization)

Salary Range
Syracuse, NY or Buffalo, NY $83,300 - $98,000 a year


Please note US Colleagues must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island and Vermont. As a National Grid employee, you should also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
