Summary
This is an internal opening for current employees in the Wastewater Treatment Division in the Industrial Maintenance Mechanic job classification only. This posting will be used to facilitate annual Job Progression for Wastewater, S.E.I.U., Local 925 - Industrial Maintenance Mechanic to progress to Industrial Maintenance Mechanic - Master at their current Treatment Plant location and supervision.
The Industrial Maintenance Mechanic - Master performs advanced-level mechanical responsibilities including conducting complex maintenance, overhaul, and installation of heavy mechanical equipment and providing leadership and direction to mechanical and other skilled craft personnel. Incumbents in this classification act as liaisons with wastewater operations staff, engineering, project managers, and vendors regarding assigned mechanical work assignments.Article 15.3 - Eligibility Progression Criteria Requirements:
- Successfully passed probation.
- The candidate possesses the certification and licenses required at the classification level.
- The candidate has completed the required training.
- The candidate has achieved an above standard rating (3.6667 to 4.333) or higher on their last performance evaluations or probationary evaluation and has successfully completed any/all formal performance improvement plans.
- The candidate has sufficient experience at the established level in critical areas and under essential circumstances to demonstrate competent performance and the higher-level classifications.
- The candidate has passed, at the established level, any required knowledge skills, general competency and/or specific technical proficiency tests.
- The candidate has been free of discipline for a minimum of one year and all disciplinary issues are resolved to the satisfaction of the review board.

Job Duties
What You Will Be Doing:
- Provide direction and training in the performance of major repairs to heavy equipment such as but not limited to pumps, motors, gearboxes, hydraulic and pneumatic pump systems and equipment, compressors and large aeration blowers and gas scrubbers. Replace bearings as determined through vibration analysis or other established techniques. Replace pump volutes, shafts, impellers. Maintain and repair oxygen generation and distribution equipment. Salvage equipment for re-use.
- Evaluate, test and troubleshoot complex malfunctions in pumps, gearboxes, compressors, gravity belt thickeners, belt presses, disinfection equipment, chemical handling equipment, hydraulic systems, complex centrifuges and other related equipment in a large industrial environment. Apply state-of-the-art-technology to perform precision maintenance on equipment to extend life and reduce costs including laser alignment vibration analysis and root cause failure analysis techniques. Develop preventative and repair procedures. Use current operating and maintenance cost measurements and historical data from internal and external sources to calculate dollar savings on an annualized basis for estimate of returns on precision maintenance.
- Provide direction and training in performing skilled machine shop assignments including milling, drilling and using a lathe, radial drill press, band saws, blueprints, engineering drawings, operations and maintenance manuals, vendor data and input based on prior experience. Provide leadership and training to mechanical staff in state-of-the-art welding. Fabricate parts for piping system, frames, fixtures, special tools, pump bases and repairs to machine housings, volutes, shafts and impellers.
- Develop, replace or modify existing systems to provide more reliable service and reduce maintenance costs and working with internal and external staff, vendors and consultants; Recommend and develop new ideas to improve wastewater treatment equipment, systems, and processes. Review and evaluate engineering work and make recommendations on design modifications and/or changes.
- Lead projects and direct the work of assigned crew involved in the repair, overhaul, installation, and maintenance of equipment as determined by the supervisor including ensuring that industrial safety regulations, standards, and procedures are being followed.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Qualifications You Bring:
- Knowledge of the application of industrial mechanical maintenance practices and techniques which is typically found in four years of millwright work experience in addition to an apprenticeship program or closed related field that demonstrates work experience in the industrial mechanical maintenance occupation.
- Advanced knowledge in using testing equipment and software and troubleshooting techniques and principles to identify and resolve equipment problems. Advanced knowledge in the application of techniques and principles of welding methods, plumbing and pipefitting.
- Knowledge of mechanical repair technology. Knowledge of lubrication techniques and principles.
- Advanced skill in applying troubleshooting techniques and principles to equipment problems with limited documentation.
- Knowledge of carpentry techniques and principles to build supports for the repair, overhaul and maintenance of industrial equipment.
- Knowledge of fabrication techniques and principles
- Knowledge of the repair, overhaul and maintenance of complex pumps and motors.
- Knowledge of machine shop practices and techniques. Demonstrated skill in equipment operation and installation, rigging and hydraulics associated with the mechanical field.
- Demonstrated skill in using welder, solder, braze, Metal Inert Gas (MIG), Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG), heli-arc, plasma cutter, oxyacetylene, carbon arc and stick welding
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures associated with hazardous chemicals and pressurized systems such as pneumatics, boilers, steam systems and high-pressure hydraulic systems.
- Knowledge of a computer and associated software including an automated maintenance work order system. Skill in the application of planning and scheduling techniques and principles.
- Skill in oral and written communication techniques and principles and the ability to apply this skill to reading, writing and following oral and written instructions.
- Skill in teaching/coaching; in establishing and maintaining working relationships with diverse groups of individuals from varying occupations and in making presentations and convincing others to initiate action.

- A list of employees who can verify your work, technical expertise and leadership in the work examples that you have identified. These employees will be surveyed by WTD-HR and asked to rate your performance, technical expertise and leadership in the situations that you identified.
What to Expect - Job Progression Promotion Review Board
Part 1 - Written Test, Interviews, Demonstrations/Working Tests, Review Portfolio (including feedback from others on tasks).
Part 2 - Trial Service Period - those recommended for progression to Industrial Maintenance Mechanic - Master by the Job Progression Promotion Review Board must successfully complete a 6-month Trial Service Period, at the employee's same site location/crew.Supplemental Information

- Work Schedule:This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
