In accordance with the Merit System Rules and Regulations, an eligible list, which will be valid for a one-year period and which will be used to fill vacancies during that period, is being established for this classification. Applicants on the eligible list will be certified in accordance with the Merit System and appropriate union contracts.

EXAMINATION PROCESS: The examination process for this posting may include an evaluation of training and experience, a written examination, a computerized exam, an oral board interview examination, a performance examination or any combination of the above in order to qualify applicants for placement on the eligible list. The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies that occur within the next year. The appropriate number of names on the eligible list as prescribed by Merit System Section 26.03.505 will be certified to the hiring department for consideration to fill the vacant position(s).

PROBABLE WEIGHTING OF EXAMINATION: Candidates must pass an examination required for entry into the paramedic training program to continue in the process. A written examination, a comprehensive background investigation to include an oral board interview examination, an evaluation of training and education, or any combination of the above, may be used to determine placement on the eligible list. Candidates must also pass a qualifying fitness test. Successful candidates will be hired by New Castle County and entered in a paramedic training program, where students must maintain passing grades, remain enrolled in the paramedic training program and achieve certification as both a Nationally Registered and Delaware paramedic. The probationary period will end six months after Delaware paramedic certification has been achieved following release to full duties as a paramedic, to include a field evaluation and certification process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least three (3) years' experience in the operation of automotive equipment and possession of a high school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of experience, education or training directly related to the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Weight should be proportionate to height; successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination and a psychological examination; successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation; minimum uncorrected vision must be 20/200 in each eye, with 20/30 corrected vision in each eye; must be free from color blindness, possession of a valid Delaware Class D driver's license or its equivalent; ability to obtain or verify the required certifications within the designated time allowed. Persons selected for paramedic training will be required to sign a five year service obligation contract.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Current Basic Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT); successful completion of the following courses Anatomy and Physiology I, Basic Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology II, Pathophysiology and/or College Algebra.
The Paramedic Training Program requires successful completion of each component of the curriculum to qualify for continued enrollment and eventual certification as a paramedic. Candidates must be able to attend and successfully complete the requirements for the classroom sessions, clinical experience rotations and field internship. A failure of any portion of the training program or any required certification course will result in a candidate being dropped from the paramedic training program and rendered ineligible for continued employment with New Castle County.CONTACT INFORMATION
