A Brief Overview

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (DCAPBS) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a psychologist with expertise in early childhood. Individuals with special training and expertise in young child assessment are encouraged to apply, including individuals trained in clinical child psychology, pediatric psychology, or pediatric neuropsychology.

The primary role of the Psychologist is to provide consultation and assessment services for infants and young children enrolled through the Neonatal Follow-Up Program and to provide guidance and support for the families of these children. The Neonatal Follow-up Program (NFP) is made up of an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, psychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and a social worker. The NFP provides services to children who were born prematurely or have other neonatal illnesses and spent time in the CHOP or affiliated NICUs. The services in the NFP include developmental assessments, behavioral consultation, medical, physical, and neuro-motor evaluations by medical staff, and parent support through screening and counseling. The Psychologist is encouraged to participate in teaching and training activities through our APA-accredited clinical psychology training program and ACGME-accredited child and adolescent psychiatry training programs.

The role of the psychologist in NFP includes providing consultation regarding emotional, behavioral, and child adjustment concerns, conducting diagnostic interviews, and clinical assessments. In addition, the psychologist will provide an in-depth interpretation of findings in the context of medical, family, and environmental history, and detailed feedback to the family during the visit, including support and advice regarding developmental, behavioral, and other concerns. The psychologist will document findings, impressions, diagnoses, and recommendations in a report letter that will be sent to the family. Recommendations may include referrals to community services, community agencies/schools, and healthcare colleagues-children in NFP range in age from 3 months to 6 years. The assessment protocol includes a standardized battery that is modified to meet the needs of specific children. The role of the psychologist will also include participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, participation in quality improvement projects, performing research visits as needed, demonstrating research certification standards, and collaborating with other psychologists in the program.

In addition to the role of providing outpatient clinical care in NFP, there are opportunities for diversification of effort that could include participation in neonatal clinical research (participation in the development, conduct, and scientific output of Federally-funded and/or foundation-funded studies), trainee education, counseling, therapy, inpatient clinical care in the NICU, and quality improvement projects.

The Psychologist provides psychological services to patients throughout the CHOP inpatient and ambulatory enterprise; participates in the educational experience of trainees; establishes plans and initiates professional growth and leadership within the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and presents work at the local or regional level.

What you will do

Clinical Activity

• Practices effectively as an independent clinician.
• Responsive to feedback from supervisors and colleagues about clinical practice.
• Provides consultation, assessment, and treatment services to children and families, in inpatient and/or outpatient settings, and communicates with referral sources as indicated.
• Perform clinical services at a percent of effort as designated by the supervisor.
• Adheres to The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences productivity standards.
• In settings where patients are scheduled into appointments, presents an EPIC schedule that rolls out, per department guidelines, delineating availability and anticipated vacation and conference time. The schedule must include enough openings to cover productivity expectations plus anticipated late cancellations/no-shows.
• Assures that professional practice is by applicable professional and licensing body standards.
• Follows all CHOP and Departmental policies and procedures regarding clinical and administrative activity associated with providing direct patient care.

Collaboration

• Collaborates within the Department and with other Department/Division colleagues to ensure that patients receive the kind of care required by patient circumstances.
• Responds to requests for consultation and service promptly.
• Participates in The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences committees.
• Works collaboratively with the program's intake coordinators and practice manager to ensure there is sufficient scheduling availability and patients are scheduled appropriately

Teaching

• May provide supervision to trainees (including externs, interns, and/or fellows) within the Department's psychology training programs
• Lectures and provides training to other disciplines (including child psychiatry)
• Participates in activities of the training faculty

Other

• Completes all mandatory education requirements, annual PPD testing, flu vaccine, and other vaccinations as per CHOP policy
• Maintain Licensure including completion of required continuing education
• Establishes plans for professional growth with the manager
• Participates in clinical program development
• Collaborates with internal staff to complete CHOP requirements including but not limited to Medical Staff Application
• Member and or active participation in a DCAPBS or CHOP Committee
• Presents work locally or regionally; publishes or presents at least one paper /chapter yearly
• Participates in community service
• Participates in ongoing professional practice evaluations as a clinician and peer reviewer

Education Qualifications

• Doctorate Psychology Required

Experience Qualifications

• APA or CPA Accredited internship training is Required and
• Completed post-doctoral training in child and adolescent-focused psychology. Required

• Licensed Psychologist (Pennsylvania) - State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required
