WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Conservation Assistant supports the TNC New Jersey Conservation team by performing and participating in preserve operations, maintenance and management and implementing a variety of river and floodplain restoration, assessment and monitoring projects throughout northern New Jersey. The Conservation Assistant is a six-month paid position and will be a mix of field, remote and office work. Office located in Chester, New Jersey.
The opportunity to participate in science-based monitoring efforts as well as hands-on preserve management and restoration activities gives this position an attractive blend of science and leadership responsibilities.
May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.


WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

The Conservation Assistant (CA) will support the TNC New Jersey Conservation Team. Working closely with freshwater staff, the CA will collect and maintain water quality and project monitoring data and assist with the Chapter's watershed-wide floodplain reforestation stewardship efforts. The CA will work with the Freshwater Science Specialist to develop their water quality monitoring and stewardship skills.
Additionally, the Conservation Assistant will work closely with the Stewardship Coordinator, conducting stewardship and maintenance of northern New Jersey flagship preserves with a focus on promoting preserve accessibility. As the public face of TNC, this position will engage with preserve visitors and volunteers and support public programming as needed.
* Participates in field work and performs standardized scientific surveys including the collection of water quality and stream benthic macroinvertebrate samples, and conducts standardized visual surveys to assess the physical condition of stream reaches.
* Assists with operation and maintenance of continuous in-stream monitor, remote sensing equipment and discrete handheld meters including but not limited to deployment, maintenance, and data management of all meters and data collected.
* Assists with on-site implementation of floodplain restoration and stewardship projects including tree maintenance, operating hand tools, heavy equipment trucks/trailers, and field equipment.
* Assists with the stewardship of northern New Jersey Flagship Preserves, conducting trail maintenance, trash removal, invasive species management, mowing, trimming, and planting and operating hand tools, heavy equipment trucks/trailers, and field equipment.
* Engages preserve visitors and volunteers and supports preserve programming including site tours, volunteer events, on-site research, tabling, talks, and educational opportunities.
* Communicates regularly with supervisor and conservation staff regarding site information
* May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

* High school diploma or GED and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
* Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
* Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
* Experience working in a team environment.
* Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

SALARY INFORMATION

The pay for a candidate selected for this position is $24 hourly. This applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA.
