The Marin County Department of Finance is responsible for the powers and duties of the offices of the auditor, controller, tax collector, treasurer, and public administrator. We serve as a collaborative partner and fiscal advisor to the County government in their consideration of fiscal decisions and planning. ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Audit Manager, the Senior Auditor will lead and mentor a team of auditors, conducting in-depth financial and operational audits of county departments, special districts, and other agencies. the Senior Auditor will be responsible for leading complex audit engagements, including planning, fieldwork, and report preparation, while analyzing financial records, identifying and evaluating risks, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and accounting standards. The Senior Auditor will also play a key role in designing and implementing effective audit procedures and systems to enhance internal controls and improve operational efficiency. Collaborating with county departments to ensure grant compliance and provide valuable recommendations for process improvement will be a significant aspect of your role. The Senior Auditor will develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the county, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of accounting and auditing standards (GAAS, GAAP, GAGAS, GIAS) and the principles of organizational theory, including planning, design, finance, development, project management, and effectiveness. 

They excel in analysis and detail oriented, with experience in risk assessments, compliance audits, and control evaluations. Excellent written and verbal communication is essential for effectively communicating issues, preparing reports, and resolving problems. We seek an organized and dependable individual who can work independently and collaboratively, leading and mentoring team members while ensuring accuracy and meeting unit objectives.

 KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Accounting theory, principles, terminology and practices to a wide variety of accounting transactions and problems.
  • Theory and practice of accepted auditing standards for commercial and governmental agencies.
  • Cost accounting principles and terminology.
  • Methods of preparing, evaluating and interpreting financial statements and transactions.
  • Principles and methods of implementing and maintaining internal controls.
  • Laws, ordinances and regulations governing the financial operations of the County and its departments.
  • Current office practices and procedures as they relate to accounting operations.
  • Electronic data processing techniques as they apply to accounting systems.
  • Principles and practices of personnel administration as they apply to training and directing audit team.

ABILITY TO

  • Determine the scope, objectives, data, procedures and work assignments of complex audit programs to effectively plan, direct and coordinate the work of audit team.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions.
  • Apply accounting and auditing principles and practices.
  • Analyze and evaluate complex financial and statistical data and arrive at logical conclusions.
  • Translate financial accounting information into a cohesive and comprehensive profile of an organization.
  • Perform mathematical computations including ratios, proportions, algebraic and other calculations applicable to auditing functions.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
  • Adjust to workload changes and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of other departments and agencies, co-workers and the public.
  • Use Microsoft Office software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

Any combination of education and experience that provide the knowledge and abilities listed below. Typically, graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with at least 24 semester or equivalent quarter units in accounting or possession of a Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant recognized by the California State Board of Accountancy and two years of professional audit experience with a governmental agency, industrial or commercial firm.

Note: The 24 semester or equivalent quarter units must include Principles of Accounting, Intermediate Accounting, Cost Accounting, Auditing and Advanced Accounting.

Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
