Staff Accountant General Description
The Staff Accountant is an integral part of the Finance and Administration Department and is responsible for the timely and accurate processing of financial transactions related to monthly close and yearly close process. The Staff Accountant is also responsible for protecting the assets of the organization and must follow all procedures and controls in a timely manner. If they identify anyone not following the procedures they must report it immediately. The Staff Accountant will provide guidance to general accounting staff. Knowledge of accounting and audit practices, procedures, regulations and laws as well as financial and development area software is essential.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage all day-to-day aspects of revenue accounting, including the recognition, recording, and reconciliation of revenue transactions including online sales
  • Manage the admissions journal process from start to finish, ensuring that all journals are received, reviewed, and processed in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure proper account coding and classification for the recording and tracking of donations, pledges, grants, and other sources of revenue related to programs and services
  • Sort daily accounting mail, deposit checks and notify appropriate departments of funds received
  • Prepare customer invoices
  • Monitor and reconcile accounts receivable and other revenue-related accounts
  • Investigate and resolve discrepancies or issues related to revenue invoices
  • Prepare and distribute regular reports on revenue activity
  • Support the month-end and year-end closing processes
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of revenue activity, ensuring that all documentation is properly filed and organized
  • Assist with the preparation of financial statements and schedules
  • Analyze accounting questions or problems and provide solutions
  • Assist with the preparation and compilation of the annual financial audit
  • Assist with any other tasks assigned by the Manager, Controller or Chief Financial Officer

Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in an accounting department.
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience working with month-end close and reconciliations.
  • Demonstrated experience with various financial cycles, which could include payables, receivables, fixed assets and general ledger.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices, and the analysis and reporting of financial data.
  • Good follow through skills and ability to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently as well part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills (oral/written).
  • Strong attention to details and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize assignments.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting software packages.
Preferred
  • Experience working for Not-for-Profit organization.
  • Experience working with NetSuite products.
Working Conditions
Regular work schedule may include weekends or may be required to work occasional evenings, weekends and early-mornings. The work environment is generally comfortable and most work is indoors although the position may require work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events, tours, openings, etc.

Physical Requirements
The Staff Accountant must have the ability to perform the principal duties of the role and lift up to 20 pounds. Job may require moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, and standing for an extended period.
