Job Summary

This job opening is for (2) Temporary Float RN positions within the Central Staffing Resource Department (CSR).  The specific cluster is for the Clinical Obstetric Anesthesia Nurse (COBAN) services. 

**BASE RATE & SHIFT DIFFERENTIALS FOR Specialty Cluster CSR STAFF NURSE TEMPS**

Wage: $55.00/hr base rate
Evening Shift Differential is $5.00 per hour for 3p-7p and $4.00 per hour for 7p-11p
Night Shift Differential is $ 3.00 per hour
Weekend Differential is $5.00 per hour

Responsibilities*

This job opening is for (2) Temporary Float RN positions within the Central Staffing Resource Department (CSR) and services COBAN.

  • Obtain a health history of parturient admitted to Labor and Delivery.
  • Provide patient education of obstetric analgesia/anesthesia options and services provided at time of admission.
  • Respond to Birth Center Emergency pages. Attend Patient Board Rounds daily with the anesthesia and obstetric care team as part of providing complete obstetric anesthesia care. Consult with anesthesiologist on clinical status of all patients admitted to Labor and Delivery, review patient's desires regarding pain management and develop pain management plan.
  • Consult with the obstetric and Labor and Delivery staff regarding patient?s clinical status and pain management plan. Prepare patients for epidural analgesia.
  • Assist anesthesiologist in establishing epidural analgesia. Monitor patients throughout epidural analgesia. 
  • Treat inadequate analgesia and limited complications associated with the procedure as directed by the anesthesiologist.
  • Re-evaluate patient?s response to pain management intervention and consult as needed with the anesthesiologist regarding changes in patient?s clinical status.
  • Perform regular patient rounds on patients with epidural analgesia to assess quality of pain management, presence of side effects or equipment problems. 
  • Consults with anesthesiologist as needed. Prepare and participate in the care of the parturient for cesarean section and other operative procedures with anesthesiologist.
  • Assist in the OR with airway management and IV access as appropriate.
  • Provide preoperative teaching for post-operative pain control options.
  • Perform daily post-operative patient rounds to assess clinical status, pain management and identify complications, discuss findings with anesthesiologist.
  • Assess, as needed, pain management of non-obstetric patients on the Acute Pain Service. 
  • Treat inadequate analgesia and limited complications as directed by the anesthesiologist.
  • Present modules at birthing class that pertain to obstetric anesthesia.
  • Participate in Labor and Delivery staff in service training. Participate in design and collection of Quality Assurance and research data.
  • Organize and participate in obstetric cost containment/quality improvement projects.
  • Maintain appropriate professional development.

These positions are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience. Recent (within the last 2-3 years) obstetric perinatal clinical experience or critical care experience.
  • Current AHA BLS Certification. Candidate will need to be able to provide proof of certification upon offer

Desired Qualifications*

  • BSN preferred
  • Knowledge of pain physiology and clinical use of anesthetic drugs (PCA, epidurals).
  • Recent experience as a charge nurse or equivalent leadership skills.
  • Teaching experience with adults.
  • Recent experience with obstetric analgesic anesthesia
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience as a float RN.
  • Demonstrated flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary health care team.

  • Experience floating to multiple units
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospital nursing policies and practice.

  • Experience with family centered care philosophy
  • Takes initiative in seeking professional growth.

Work Schedule

**Minimum commitment is 24 hours per 4 week scheduling block**  Additional hours can be discussed.

Shift/Hours: 12 hr shifts, Day/Evening/Night shifts (one weekend a month)

Nursing Information:

  • Expected to float to like units where competent and qualified in times of low census
  • Inability to work for (3) months consecutively leads to automatic termination from employment
  • No guarantee of work at any time. Shifts can and sometimes will be cancelled.
  • At least a portion of the availability must be during non-day shifts

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

TEMPORARY FLOAT NURSE GUIDELINES
1). All CSR employees are required to attend an annual educational Blitz to complete required
UM mandatories and compentencies (BCLS every 2 yrs, Cardiac Arrest and maintain all
other applicable certifications).
2). Temporary Float Nurses are expected to work all shifts requested unless no work is
available. It is the intention that all Temps will float to all units within the cluster speciality.
3). A Temporary Nurse should work 24 hours per 4 week schedule block. You may request four
(4), eight (8), or twelve (12) hours shifts in advance.
4.) Temporary Nurses in the CSR Clusters are NOT required to work weekends or holidays.
5). Temporary Nurses will participate in a newly designed, streamlined, onboarding/orientation
program. However, the progression of orientation will be dependent upon clinical
competency, staffing needs of the individual units, and the number of hours worked by the
Temporary RN.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
