As a Summer Intern (Gridtern Program), you will be fully immersed in the energy industry. Your summer will start with us on May 27, 2025, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking, opportunities to get involved in your community and most importantly, have fun!

Intern responsibilities will vary based upon your area of interest and department placement. Applying to this opportunity confirms your interest in being considered for one or more of the below departments for summer 2025:

Distribution Design (Buffalo, NY)

Our Distribution Design team plans and executes all overhead and underground work for our construction crews including residential service hookups and complex large commercial projects. In designing and evaluating the mechanical and electrical loading of poles installed on our Grid, this team helps to ensure the planning of 15,000 volts on the utility side is distributed throughout our service areas down to 120 volts in an individual outlet. They are instrumental in acquiring the necessary dig safes, permits, and easements which contribute to a seamless installation of National Grid's facilities across our service territories. As a Gridtern, you will assist with daily on-site visits with local representatives to meet with electricians and developers, along with evaluating numerous pole designs and installations within our database.

Distribution Planning & Asset Management (Buffalo, NY)

Our Distribution Planning and Asset Management team (DPAM) is responsible for developing recommendations for modifications and additions to our sub-transmission and distribution facilities to improve the resilience of our system against adverse weather events, modernizing the grid to meet projected capacity requirements, and enhancing our customer service quality. As a Gridtern, you will be involved in supporting our data initiatives, violation identification, and engineering responsibilities throughout such as feeder coordination studies, underground cable ratings, and downtown network studies.

Economic Development - Corporate Affairs NY (Buffalo, NY)

Our Economic Development - Corporate Affairs team provides support to sustainable economic growth across communities in National Grid's NY service territory. This team focuses on attracting new commercial and industrial customers, retaining existing customers, developing "Shovel Ready" sites and stimulating new investment in downtown business districts. In addition, they administer a portfolio of incentive programs (grants and discounts) aimed at supporting each of these objectives and work closely with other externally focused teams at National Grid to deliver comprehensive solutions to customers and communities. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to interact with customers and economic development stakeholders and assist with tasks related to administering and delivering our grant programs to customers.

Substation Operations & Maintenance Services (Buffalo, NY)

Our Substation Operations & Maintenance Services team plays a critical role in analyzing and providing technical support to ensure the effective completion of construction and maintenance activities within Electric Operations. This team is responsible for ensuring the reliability of substations, equipment, standards, and procedures. They adeptly manage damage failure projects and successfully implement SF6 emissions reductions. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to substation spare inventory analysis and provide solutions for damage failures. You will also conduct power transformer spare analysis, calculate thermal ratings, and track SF6 levels while detecting leaks. Additionally, you will be involved in project energization and commissioning.

What You'll Need

  • Availability to start on program start date, May 27, 2025, and work full-time (40 hours a week) throughout your duration of the summer
  • Registered in school as a full-time student and continuing education full-time for Fall 2025 Semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, or Master's degree
  • Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Urban Planning, Economics, or a related field
  • Accumulated 18 or more credits and be 18 years of age
  • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver's license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be included in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

More Information

Salary Range

$18.00 - $29.00

(Salary placement is determine based on your academic standing, with variations depending on whether you are a Bachelors or Masters level student)

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
