Survey Technician (Statewide)

** This position requires statewide travel and typically works four 10-hour days per week but must be willing to work additional hours/days, as needed. 

Must be willing to participate on storm evaluation and restoration teams (if necessary.)

The Survey Technician is a highly skilled technical member of a field survey crew. This individual is responsible for performing all survey related field duties, including operating field instruments and data collection devices on land surveying projects for the Land Engineering department.  

Typical surveys may include deformation surveys, boundary surveys, topographical surveys, route surveys, establishing survey control points, etc. This individual will be required to accurately collect, edit, and process survey data, prepare necessary plots and reports, and properly store all data, plots and reports. 

This individual will be expected to conduct surveying work in the absence of daily supervision. The survey technician will work to ensure Land Engineering projects are completed accurately and on schedule while maintaining a focus on Safety Excellence.  

Position will be filled at appropriate level based on knowledge and experience.  

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Certified Survey Technician (CST) or Surveying Certificate Program courses, a plus

Experience Requirements 

  • Minimum of 1 year of land survey experience, a plus 
  • Experience in use of Carlson field data collection software, a plus
  • Experience in use of global positioning systems (GPS), a plus
  • CAD experience (in AutoCAD or Carlson), a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of land and construction surveying concepts, techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and measurements related to surveying.
  • Knowledge of the operation, setup, care and use of surveying tools & equipment, and ability to perform basic equipment calibration.
  • Understanding of research needs in support of field survey (GPC Land Records research, courthouse research, etc.)
  • Ability to read and understand surveying and property documents and drawings.
  • Knowledge of applicable survey standards including the Georgia Plat Act.
  • Knowledge of basic drafting and CAD skills with understanding of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Knowledge of Global Positioning System (GPS), both static and RTK. Also, knowledge in use of VRS networks.
  • Basic knowledge of the various survey coordinate datum and projection systems and their differences.
  • Knowledge of (or willing to learn) company specific software/databases.
  • Ability to use of basic office software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
  • Good communication skills, team working ability, multi-tasking ability, ability to work under pressure.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable safety rules and environmental regulations.

Duties

  • Accurately collect survey data using field survey instrumentation and data collection devices, including use of GPS (static and RTK) and VRS networks . 
  • Function as part of a survey team to complete boundary surveys, topographic surveys, route surveys, deformation surveys, hydrographic surveys, construction layout, installation of survey control points, etc. in the absence of direct supervision 
  • Ensure all applicable survey codes are correctly used.
  • Utilize CAD drafting tools and survey processing software to process and edit survey data, prepare sketches of field survey data and to assist in mapping survey projects.
  • Perform research required to complete survey projects which may include public property records (courthouse research, etc.) and in-house records.
  • Provide training and development for less experienced employees.
  • Maintain survey equipment & tools and regularly assess equipment needs.
  • Perform to ensure work is completed as accurately and efficiently as possible. 
  • Work safely and abide by all company specific safety regulations.  Perform daily job safety briefing prior to work activities.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license, required.
  • CST, LSIT, RLS certification, a plus

This position has been identified as a role that will require the use of a Georgia Power fleet vehicle.  The following will be required if you are selected for this position:

  • Must have at least one year of verifiable driving experience (Must hold a valid driver’s license for the class vehicle to be operated. Driving permits are not typically considered a valid driver’s license). 
  • Must have no revocation of driving privileges within the 36 months prior to application, no convictions of major traffic violations (DUI, hit and run, reckless driving, etc.) within the 12 months prior to application, or any pending charges for a major traffic violation at the time of application.
  • Must consent to a continuous monitoring of your Motor Vehicle Record
