Full Job Description

Job Summary

Develops and maintains a program of policies, systems, methods and procedures for the effective management and control of the purchasing function to reduce costs and produce additional income. Compiles and analyzes statistical data to determine feasibility of buying products and to establish price objectives for contract transactions. Obtains data for cost analysis studies by determining manufacturing costs within divisions of company. Prepares reports, charts, and graphs of findings. Evaluates findings and makes recommendations regarding feasibility of manufacturing or buying needed products. Recommends use of alternative parts, materials, or manufacturing methods to reduce costs. Employees in this classification typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision-making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree.

Responsibilities*

  • This position reports directly to the Value Analysis Manager for UMH.
  • Serves as a key liaison between the OR Supply Chain and the Corporate Value Analysis Department within Supply Chain Services.
  • Serves as a key collaborator with OR physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff.
  • Manages supply chain activities and utilization/consolidation efforts in collaboration with department heads, surgeons, vendor representatives.
  • Plans and coordinates new product evaluations and conversions in the ORs
  • Reviews and enforces department and hospital protocols regarding contract compliance and supply chain processes.
  • Assists with the monitoring of vendor relationships and behaviors.
  • Facilitates medical device decision-making between clinical, administrative and supply chain stakeholders.
  • Assists OR departments with identification and evaluation of critical surgical backorder items.
  • Follows the Medical Device Review process for New Product Requests initiated by Departments. 
  • Facilitates departmental focused Value Analysis Initiatives including:
  • Facilitates/participates in the Value Analysis Team (VAT) committee.
  • Advises clinicians to report on medical device failures.  Assists with supplier follow-up when appropriate.
  • Maintains record of implemented process improvement initiatives and documented cost savings achieved through the value analysis process.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Care, Supply Chain Management, Business, or Nursing 
  • Three years experience in Sourcing, Contracting, Supply Chain, and/or Health Care environment. Strong preference will be given to a background in the OR setting. 
  • Three years experience in performing complex analysis.
  • Expertise in Microsoft applications such as Excel, Visio, and PowerPoint
  • Significant knowledge of medical device (equipment and disposables) use in a clinical setting is required.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • High level of professionalism, honesty, and integrity with the ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Dedicated to continuous improvement and personal development.
  • Able to create and maintain enthusiasm for new and challenging goals.
  • Serves as a role model by promoting new ideas and positive change.
  • Experience facilitating decision-making with diverse stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Recent (within last 3 years) clinical experience such as Nursing or comparable, is preferred especially in the OR setting
  • Health care supply chain operation knowledge
  • Value and cost-benefit analysis experience
  • Ability to work in a fast paced high pressure setting

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 7am-5pm - flexibility to start/end time required based on departmental/project needs. Typically no weekends and no holidays.

This position is an operational position and will be based in the UMH OR. There will be times where work can be conducted at the Green Rd Corporate Supply Chain Office or remotely at the discretion of the Value Analysis Manager

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
