WHO WE ARE

The mission of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is to conserve the lands and waters upon which all life depends. As a science-based organization, we develop innovative, on-the-ground solutions to the world's toughest environmental challenges so that people and nature can thrive. Our work is guided by our values, which include a commitment to diversity and respect for people, communities, and cultures. From a rewarding mission to career development and flexible schedules, there are many reasons to love life #insideTNC. Want to know more? Check out our TNC Talent playlist on YouTube to hear stories from staff or visit Glassdoor.

One of TNC's primary goals is to cultivate an inclusive work environment so that employees around the globe have a sense of belonging and feel that their unique contributions are valued. We know we'll only achieve our mission by hiring and engaging a diverse staff that reflects the communities in which we work. Recognizing that people bring talent and skills that have been developed outside the scope of a job, we take a holistic approach to recruitment that considers life experience in addition to the professional requirements listed in our postings. Please apply - we'd love to hear from you. To quote a popular saying at TNC, "you'll join for the mission, and you'll stay for the people."

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Volunteer and Stewardship Coordinator (VSC) will help connect people to nature and advance TNC's conservation goals by supporting the Volunteer & Community Engagement and Stewardship Programs in Oregon. The VSC assists with land management operations, community outreach and engagement activities, and coordinates and supervises volunteers. This position will help improve TNC and local park lands, increase opportunities for volunteerism, and strengthen TNC's relationships with community partners. We anticipate the majority of this work will take place in the Portland Metro area, with occasional travel to the coast, Columbia River Gorge and other areas in Oregon. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.

The Volunteer and Stewardship Coordinator works with staff and volunteers to maintain public access infrastructure such as trails, kiosks, boardwalks, and interpretive materials and through stewardship tasks such as removal of non-native invasive plants, trash removal, and legal compliance monitoring in accordance with Land Trust Alliance standards. The VSC will coordinate and supervise small to medium-scale volunteer events such as trail maintenance and invasive species management. They will process forms, enter data, and prepare reports regarding the volunteer program and may support TNC's volunteer recognition, crew leader, steward, and naturalist programs. As part of our partnership work, the position may help us develop community engagement opportunities for community partners and engage in outreach at strategically important events.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU

Are you looking for work you can believe in? At TNC we strive to embody a philosophy of Work that You Can Believe in where you can feel like you are making a difference every day.

The ideal candidate should have good communication and collaboration skills and experience designing, organizing, and directing projects. They will have experience creating inclusive spaces and engaging with diverse communities. They will also be committed to protecting, caring for, and making better the land TNC owns and manages. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing mission of conservation by contributing to and shaping the work of our team!

In addition to working with volunteers and the community, this position will take care of 2 TNC-owned properties in the Portland metro area. The first, Camassia Natural Area, is a beautiful 27-acre preserve in West Linn, Oregon where the shallow soils of this rocky plateau support wet meadows, Oregon white oak-madrone woodlands, vernal and permanent ponds, and even a stand of quaking aspen, as well as a stunning spring bloom of Common camas (its namesake) and a rainbow of other wildflowers. The second is the Sandy River Gorge Preserve, a 157-acre preserve located along the banks of the Sandy River. The site boasts a lush rainforest, green with cedars, firs, ferns and numerous other native plant species.

The VSC will be based in Portland, Oregon with options to work in the Portland office or a hybrid of Portland office and home office (which must be located in the Portland area). This position will have a large field work component and may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. The VSC will report to the Director of Volunteer Programs and Associate Director of Stewardship.

We currently anticipate that the need and/or funding for this position will end on February 1, 2027; however, depending on business need and/or funding, there may be the possibility of an extension. Regardless of the duration of the position, please keep in mind that because The Nature Conservancy is an at-will employer, either you or the Conservancy may end the employment relationship at any time.
