DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Watershed Protection Supervisor, implement the Cambridge Water Department’s (CWD) comprehensive water quality monitoring program and support other watershed protection programs and staff. This position will include the following duties and responsibilities:
Water Quality Monitoring, Data Management, and Data Analysis
- Conduct routine ambient water quality monitoring and in-stream flow measurements;
- Manage water quality monitoring databases and maintain the annual source water quality monitoring report;
- Perform QA/QC of water quality data to ensure accuracy prior to data publication;
- Analyze and trend water quality data, characterize source water quality;
- Manage and maintain Fresh Pond Reservation usership databases; develop annual reports on Fresh Pond Reservation usership and trends;
- Assist in maintaining the Watershed Division’s Site Monitoring Tool for field data collection and reporting;
Laboratory
- Maintain and calibrate field and laboratory water quality monitoring equipment;
- Operate Turner Trilogy® Laboratory Fluorometer and a FluoroQuik Fluorometer;
- Identify and enumerate phytoplankton using a light microscope;
- Identify and enumerate macroinvertebrate samples;
- Conduct other laboratory analyses as required;
GIS
- Create and maintain ArcGIS maps, Dashboards, and other ESRI applications;
- Develop/edit spatial data;
- Create and maintain ESRI FieldMap and Survey123 surveys;
Other
- Assist Watershed Protection Supervisor with construction site and dam inspections, as well as hazmat spill response equipment inventories;
- Manage the Watershed Division website;
- Create posters, presentations, brochures, and other outreach materials for watershed projects;
- Assist on-boarding and training the Watershed Management Assistant;
- Perform other duties as they arise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Two years experience in watershed protection, hydrology, wetland biology, or environmental engineering.
- Bachelor’s degree in sciences, engineering or related field
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Access)
- Working knowledge of ArcGIS software and applications
- Proficiency with analyzing and interpreting physical, chemical, and biological ambient water quality data.
- Algae identification and enumeration experience
- Demonstrated experience working in a laboratory setting, maintaining field equipment, and managing large environmental datasets.
- Excellent attention to detail
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to convey technical information to the general public
- Applicant must be self-motivated with the ability to work in different environments
- Valid driver’s license
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of R programming language
- Familiarity with Massachusetts’s environmental regulations
- Macroinvertebrate identification experience
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to walk through natural, unmaintained wooded areas over uneven terrain and obstacles. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. The position will require sampling from a small boat, so the applicant must know how to swim and be comfortable sitting and maneuvering in an aquatic vessel. Lift up to 50 pounds. Answer telephones and maintain multiple files. Must read and analyze large quantities of information. Must have sufficient mobility to get back and forth from the office to offsite meetings, facilities and watershed. Ability to work alone in all weather conditions. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted primarily in an office environment with fluorescent lighting, air conditioning, computers and other standard office equipment, but also involves meetings in other offices or facilities and be outside under potentially severe weather conditions in the Cambridge Watershed. Position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City’s Telework Policy, depending on operational needs.
