Summary Under general supervision, performs technical duties in the preparation of surgical microscopic examination. Prepares histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologist. Processes, embeds, cuts and stains surgical biopsies and anatomical tissue. Performs complex histologic procedures and analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Performs, records, and analyzes data in order to make judgements. Reports to the Anatomic Pathology Manager with clinical oversight by the pathologist. Essential Functions · Receives and accessions tissue and prepares specimens for histologic processing. Performs necessary logging routines. Checks each specimen for criteria of acceptability, assuring proper patient identification, specimen integrity, and appropriate paperwork. Refers any problem specimen to the area of collection and informs the supervisor for follow-up action where necessary. · Prepares sections of tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section techniques to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen received from surgery. · Prepares slides of specimens to enhance visibility under microscope. Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist. · Processes, embeds, and sections tissues for slides. Performs routine and special stains according to department procedures. Prepares frozen-section slides on the cryostat instrument for frozen-section diagnosis. · Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Studies slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and reports abnormalities for further study. · Performs preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures. Maintains equipment, instruments and cleanliness of work area. · Performs special techniques which require higher level of educational background than histotechnician such as enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry. · Performs instrument maintenance using established protocols. · Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and company policies and procedures. Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelors degree or graduate of an accredited histotechnology program. ASCP certification as a histologic technician (HTL). Skills and Experience: Functioning knowledge of anatomy, chemistry, physiology, and experience in enzymes histochemistry and immunoperoxidase stains. Ability to perform accurate, reliable and high level work quickly and under pressure. Ability to communicate well verbally and in writing. Good hand eye coordination and the ability to work with delicate instruments and automated equipment. Working Conditions Busy Labenvironment with frequent deadlines and interruptions. Lab employees must use protective equipment to avoid exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, asbestos and other hazardous substances.
