Description

Acts as driver and key contact partner for statistical aspects on the methodological level. As an international specialist in complex statistical methodology to foster methodological innovation in clinical development at BI, develops innovative, more efficient statistical methods for ready-to-use applications in BI studies and projects. Supports the BDS organization via project consultations, piloting, implementation support and training regarding your statistical area(s) of expertise. Concrete application areas may include adaptive clinical trial designs, enrichment designs, aspects of multiplicity, statistical approaches to Go/noGo milestone decision making and Probability-of-Success/Assurance, as well as developing a statistical framework for drug portfolio management. Complex statistical modelling, innovative applications of Bayesian methods for leveraging external evidence in clinical development may be other application areas. Further areas of interest might be statistical methods for dose finding, artificial intelligence machine learning applications in the context of clinical development.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans and provides statistical consultation and mentorship in more than one area.Contributes to strategic goals of BDS through contributing to the statistical-methodological development and innovation. Influences and contributes to the alignment of the goals for BDS and other units at BI.
  • Ensures cross-functional and team-based working within BDS and with other units at BI. Fulfills tasks of other functions as needed and possible. Contributes to cross-functional- and team-based thinking.
  • Identify trends in data science and in particular statistics within and outside BI. Initiate and turn derived insights into new statistical approaches and ready-to-use toolkits relevant for clinical development, registration, and marketing of drugs. Promote broad usage of existing or newly developed innovative, complex statistical methods and mentor statisticians in applying them to their projects.
  • At the request of statisticians in clinical development teams, provide technical and methodological consultancy to support projects and the therapeutic area as well as support the statisticians in justifying and defending new or complex statistical methods in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plans and conducts statistical trainings for statisticians and non-statisticians.
  • Lead or participate in cross-functional BI internal working-groups or lead cross-functional human pharma internal working-groups and drive/plan relevant statistical aspects.  Represents BI in or leads external communications and collaborations (e.g. across industry-working groups).
  • Present compelling validated stories regarding complex statistical aspects to BDS colleagues and other professionals within and outside of BI.
  • Collaborate with academic experts via initiation and supervision of PhD students in applied statistical methodology topics and represent BI Statistics in joint research proposals with industry and academia.
  • If applicable, supports the clinical drug development process as a BDS Product Owner up to the therapeutic area level.

Requirements

Candidate will be hired into appropriate level based upon education and/or skill.

Senior Principal Requirements:

  • Master of Science (MSc) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) from an accredited institution, in Statistics or Mathematics or related field (Psychology, Data Science, Finance, etc.).
  • At least seven (7) years of experience as a statistician or data scientist in an area relevant for the specific role.  However, working experience might be partially compensated by broad and deep topic-specific knowledge, e.g. with respect to statistical methodology.

Principal Requirements:

  • Master of Science (MSc) or Doctoral Degree (PhD) from an accredited institution, in Statistics or Mathematics or related field (Psychology, Data Science, Finance, etc.).
  • At least five (5) years of experience as a statistician or data scientist in an area relevant for the specific role.  However, working experience might be partially compensated by broad and deep topic-specific knowledge, e.g. with respect to statistical methodology.

Additional Requirements:

  • Statistical experience gained in an international context and ideally in different companies/ academic institutions.
  • Ideally, additional qualification and experience in a leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of competitor and agency strategies and/or in-depth knowledge regarding statistical approaches developed and implemented by other companies or academia in a global context.
  • In-depth knowledge of parts of BDS and related parts of other organizations at BI regarding their contribution to BIs strategy.
  • In-depth knowledge of statistical methodology and clinical development.
  • In-depth understanding of statistical concepts related to clinical development.
  • Ability to supervise scientific/technical work.
  • Proficient in the use of software languages to implement statistical concepts.
  • Mindful of local, global, internal and external cultures to ensure that messages are received positively and effectively.
  • Ability to lead and facilitate meetings required.
  • Evidence of strong teamwork, ideally also in global and remote context.
  • Very good interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with people, internally and externally (e.g., CROs, experts, management).
  • Ability to pro-actively identify issues and solutions and to interact with internal and external bodies on statistical topics.
  • Know, understand, and implement:
    • International regulations and guidelines for good clinical and statistical practice from all ICH regions
    • The various international guidelines on clinical development, data standardization, and
    • BI processes and SOPs that govern clinical development in particular with respect to strategic areas e.g. Clinical Development Plan)

    Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities

    • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following statistical-methodological topics: Adaptive and Enrichment Designs, Multiplicity and Multiple Testing, Probability of Success / Assurance, GoNoGo frameworks and decision making, statistical techniques for portfolio management, Bayesian statistics, causal inference, mediation analysis and joint modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning

    Compensation
