A Brief Overview
A research technician position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Douglas Wallace at the Center of Mitochondrial and Epigenomic Medicine at CHOP. Our laboratory uses a range of molecular and cellular biology, mouse genetics, and genomics techniques to study metabolic regulation and its implication in both normal physiology and disease conditions. The main responsibilities of this position are to maintain the lab's mouse colony and provide technical and other support to the research team. We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual who is highly organized and who possesses the social skills to interact with a wide range of scientific staff. The basic duties include laboratory mice husbandry and maintenance, performing molecular biology/cell biology/genomics experiments, as well as scientific and regulatory record keeping.


Animal management
Manage colonies of genetically modified mice under the guidance of researchers. Duties include setting up breeding, weaning, health checks, genotyping, tissue biopsies, record keeping, and coordinating with the animal facility for proper maintenance of mouse husbandry.


Research support
Maintain and support a good environment for the research team. Duties include animal phenotyping experiments (such as behavioral assays), routine molecular biology experiments (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, etc), and preparation of research material for the research team

What you will do

  • Maintains the lab mouse colony through daily checks, setting up breeding pairs, genotyping, etc
  • Breeds and allocates experimental mice for ongoing studies in the lab
  • Performs routine tests / experiments under the direction of principal investigator, supervisor or other designee.
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
  • Records and checks experiments/results for completeness and accuracy
  • Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Performs tasks that may require minimal familiarity with fundamental techniques and lab equipment
  • Assists in care of lab equipment
  • Sterilizes and cleans glassware, and disposes of specimens, media and other materials using appropriate procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook (physical or electronic) in an organized manner.
  • Conducts literary searches as directed.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • Related classroom or laboratory experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) Required
  • At least six (6) months Related classroom or laboratory experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) Preferred
