ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) implements the City’s enforcement program related to the Massachusetts State Building Code and certain articles of the State Sanitary Code. More specifically, these responsibilities encompass the administration of the State Building, Plumbing and Gas, Electrical, and Mechanical Codes, the Massachusetts Access Board Regulations (521 CMR) and the provisions of the State Sanitary Code that address the inspection of food handling establishments, housing, lead paint and asbestos testing and removal, day care, and swimming pools. Also, ISD is responsible for the enforcement of the City Zoning Ordinance and for the provision of administrative support for the Board of Zoning Appeal (BZA). ISD prides itself on delivering excellent customer service and using enforcement as a tool to promote the health and safety of the Cambridge community.
ABOUT THE JOB:
The City of Cambridge Inspectional Services Department is seeking a highly motivated person to assume the role of fill-in/on-call Wiring Inspector.
On an as-needed basis: Under the direction of the Commissioner of Inspectional Services and the Manager of Building Inspections, in accordance with the provisions of the municipal ordinances, state laws and the National Electrical Code, perform responsible supervisory and technical work involving responsibility for electrical inspectional work and for the enforcement of law and regulations pertaining to electrical wiring and installation in the City of Cambridge and related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Inspect electrical wiring and fixture installations for compliance with the safety requirements of the Massachusetts Electrical Code
- inspect electrical wiring installations for transmission of electrical current for light, heat and power in any building in order to ascertain conformance with safety laws and regulations and give final approval of such installations prior to the turning on of the current
- investigate complaints from landlords, tenants, and Fire Prevention Bureau and others and issue orders for the correction of defects or violations
- gather evidence for the prosecution of violators and give testimony in court cases, consult with superiors on the more difficult or unusual cases; and prepare related reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
At least three years within the last five years of full time, paid experience in electrical work as a licensed journeyman or master electrician. "A" or "B" Massachusetts Master or Journeyman Electrician’s license, issued by the State Board of Examiners of Electricians. Working knowledge in personal computer operation and experience in working with Windows programs such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Applicants must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License and have access to a personal motor vehicle.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposure to all weather conditions. Ability to negotiate in constrained areas, e.g., basements, attics, roof areas, etc. Some occasional lifting, pulling, pushing, squatting, and reaching. The work environment involves field inspections, office duties, such as counter, record room and other work as designated by the Manager of Building Inspections.
