At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we’ve invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space. Here, we will bring together talent and expertise, building upon GSK’s long history of vaccine development, to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccines technologies, as we add to our robust portfolio targeting infectious diseases at every stage of life.

The Mammalian Expression Technology Center of Excellence, Technical Research & Development, GSK Vaccines is responsible for the development of CHO based production cell lines, next-gen cell line engineering and baseline upstream process for innovative recombinant protein/adjuvanted vaccine projects and platforms.

The MET CoE is looking for a motivated technical expert for developing commercial CHO based cell line for recombinant protein-based vaccines. Located in Cambridge, MA, the position will play a significant role in shaping current and next generation GSK’s leading vaccine platforms to accelerate addressing unmet medical needs, an exciting field having a direct impact into patients and global health. This role provides the opportunity to integrate a diverse group of top talented experts in vaccines’ industry, lead key activities and further grow and progress in your career. These activities will include:

  • Hands-on design and development of commercial CHO cell lines for recombinant protein-based vaccines by harnessing the understanding in cell x molecule x process.
  • Key technical leader to development and implement innovative cell line expression system and high throughput data-driven cell line derivation workflow to enable rapid delivery of antigen-expression cell lines with robust productivity and quality.
  • Work within a global team (US and BE), collaborate transversally with other DS teams, Analytical R&D, etc., in an agile and open way ensuring good communication and alignment for project milestone delivery.
  • Stay ahead with the latest quality and regulatory guidance/strategy to support project documentation (as it is related to cell line raw material control strategies and cell line derivation technical reports) to accelerated CMC submissions.

The successful applicant may spend 3-6 months within the first year of hire in Rockville, MD to support and guarantee a smooth transition of methods and know-how to the new laboratories in Cambridge, MA.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or Bioengineering with 2+ years of laboratory experience.
  • MS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or Bioengineering with 5+ years of laboratory experience.
  • BS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or Bioengineering with 8+ years of laboratory experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in CMC development space for commercial grade mammalian cell lines for drug substance production.
  • Two or more years of experience with advanced automated cell line derivation/analytic instruments (Including Beacon optofluidic system) for novel biomolecules.
  • One or more years of experience in cell and molecular biology as it is related to Omics space (proteomic, genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic).

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Deep understanding in Drug Substance CMC space (Technical, quality and regulatory aspects) as it is related to cell line development.
  • Demonstrated capability of implementing QbD principle to guide designing and selection of robust expression cell lines.
  • Ability to embed advanced data analytics and data sciences into cell line derivation workflow for accelerated project delivery with an ambition to move towards in-silico modelling to enable early selection of lead cell lines.
  • Operational knowledge with high throughput process tools (e.g. high throughput small scale bioreactor and process analytics) as it is related to cell line selection.
