Overview

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) provides operations support services and business solutions to the community of 10,000 House Members, Officers and staff. The CAO organization comprises more than 650 technical and administrative staff working in a variety of areas, including information technology, finance, budget management, human resources, payroll, childcare, food and vending, procurement, logistics and administrative counsel.

The House of Representatives Childcare Center (HRCCC) has been providing full-day, year-round, quality childcare for children of the Members of Congress, staff, and House support personnel since 1987. Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the HRCCC is a developmentally based childcare program where staff work as partners with parents in the development of the whole child, including their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. Our mission is to provide exceptional quality care and developmentally appropriate learning experiences in a safe, nurturing, and diverse environment to support the children and families of the House Community.

The incumbent serves as a Teacher Aide or Teacher Assistant and is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day delivery of exemplary childcare services to the House Community. The duties and responsibilities will be carried out under the direction of the Lead Teacher and an Age Group specific Assistant Director. Incumbents will be assigned to an Infant (10 weeks to 12 months), Young Toddler (1 to 2 years), Older Toddler (2 to 3 years), Preschool (3 to 4 years), Preschool (3 to 4 years), Pre-K (4 to 5 years) classroom or be assigned as a Floater who rotates through classrooms to ensure appropriate coverage. The position does not have supervisory/managerial responsibilities unless otherwise directed. Pay is commensurate with experience with a minimum annualized salary of $47,263.

Primary Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Supports daily childcare services in the assigned classroom, ensuring children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs are met (e.g., feeding, toileting, comforting).
  • Supervises children, conducts health and safety checks, and maintains child-to-staff ratios. Reports relevant issues to Lead Teacher or Director.
  • Prioritizes health and safety, responds to emergencies, and monitors special health and dietary needs. Follows cleaning and sanitation guidelines.
  • Participates in the planning, implementation, and documentation of developmentally appropriate curriculum and assessments.
  • Maintains compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Treats children, families, and staff with dignity and respect, embracing individual differences.
  • Builds positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Communicates professionally, both verbally and in writing, and maintains confidentiality.
  • Monitors child development provides feedback on curriculum, and contributes to lesson planning and activity leadership.
  • Completes classroom logs, child records, and documentation accurately and on time, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Uses resources effectively and reports issues with materials or constraints promptly to administration.
  • Applies developmentally appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Supports children and families during transitions (e.g., enrollment, classroom changes, daily routines).
  • Participates in special projects, initiatives, and after-action reviews, offering feedback as needed.
  • Monitors inventory of supplies and materials, informing administrators of needs.
  • Pursues ongoing professional development and demonstrates a commitment to growth.

Qualifications

  • Possesses high school diploma or equivalent. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential preferred.
  • Experience working with young children and their families.
  • One year of experience in an early childhood classroom setting preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification
