Reporting to the Director of Social Sciences and Clark Library, you will serve a necessary role within the Clark Library, including the direct management of the Map Collection with holdings of over 400,000 maps and 10,000 atlases. You will manage the stewardship of collections, including preservation, security, and have expertise in cartography and the history of cartography. You will also explore new models for collaboration to support the important interdisciplinary scholarship conducted on campus, ensuring your team's work is infused with an unwavering commitment to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Responsibilities*
Collection Management & Development (50%)
- Provide leadership for the acquisition, bibliographic support, and preservation of Clark Library cartographic materials and related collections.
- Work with the Clark Library collections coordinator to manage the map collection budget and funds, determine budget priorities, and planning for major purchases.
- Curate the cartographic collections of the Clark Library, including building the collections through acquisitions of relevant titles across our geographic and thematic subject areas.
- Work with Conservation and Preservation librarians and staff to provide direction for the care of the Clark Library collections, including physical treatments and housing of physical objects.
- Provide guidance for the library in the digital scanning or other imaging, and in digitization of selected materials in the Clark Library for both research requests and adding to the UM Clark Library Maps digital collection.
Reference, Instruction & Outreach (40%)
- Provide course-integrated instruction encouraging the use of library services and collections, especially with cartographic and visual materials.
- Provide reference assistance for map and geography related queries.
- Provide guidance in the development of research projects, including theses and dissertations, where cartographic or spatial content is central.
- Create and teach workshops on relevant topics; collaborate with other subject librarians to teach workshops
Professional Activities (10%)
- Pursue professional development activities to expand areas of expertise.
Required Qualifications*
- ALA-accredited master's degree or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.
- Two years of experience working with cartographic materials.
- Knowledge of or experience with current standards related to the identification, organization, preservation, processing/cataloging, and digitization of primary source cartographic materials.
- Knowledge of map making and map production, including their history, and current methods using geographic information systems, digital data resources, modern methods of fieldwork, and the academic or professional use of all spatially-related information.
- Knowledge of resources relevant to research and instruction in all subject areas of the Clark Library, and in the history of cartography, and the use of mapping in research, scholarship and instruction.
- Understanding of geospatial concepts including scale, projection grids, and geographic coordinate systems? some knowledge of relevant cataloging and metadata standards.
- At least 1 year experience presenting workshops, classes, information sessions, and individual/group meetings

Additional Information
The anticipated hire date is January 2025.
Appointment is anticipated as an Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Sr. Associate Librarian, or Librarian Rank. Salary and rank are dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $61,000 to $66,000 for the Assistant Librarian rank, $66,000 to $76,000 for the Associate Librarian rank, $76,000 - $86,000 for the Sr. Associate Librarian rank, and $87,000 - $95,000 for the Librarian rank.
This appointment is subject to the UM/LEO-GLAM collective bargaining agreement.

- The person in this position works on a desktop computer for long periods, handles large map folders, and moves books and boxes as part of their duties.
