Join Our Team as a Diesel Mechanic at STA!
Student Transportation of America (STA) in Columbia, MO is seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic B to join our dedicated team. This is a full-time, hourly position ideal for a seasoned professional with significant technical training and experience in automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environments. Key Responsibilities:Perform thorough and accurate Preventative Maintenance (PM) inspections on buses, vans, and automobiles.
Complete PM tasks such as lubrication, fluid changes, brake adjustments, and tire rotations according to schedules.
Conduct unscheduled maintenance as directed by the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor.
Execute complex repairs on engines, electrical systems, fuel systems, brakes, and exhausts.
Use ladders and other elevation equipment for maintenance tasks on bus roofs and elevated light fixtures.
Operate CDL and Non-CDL vehicles for road tests and garage shuttling.
Lift heavy equipment (up to 100lbs), such as brake drums, tires, ladders, tool chests, floor jacks, etc.
Utilize tools including bench grinders, torches, drill presses, jacks, Sawzalls, oil pumps, power washers, and parts cleaners.
Provide emergency roadside services, including operating replacement vehicles or utility trucks.
Be available for emergency calls, extended hours, or weekend work as required.
Document repairs and parts usage accurately on work orders.
Maintain a neat and orderly workspace and toolset.
Comply with all safety provisions and OSHA standards.
Adhere to State EPA regulations on toxic waste disposal.
Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent, with specialized vehicle and equipment repair training.
Minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a mechanic in automotive, school bus, trucking, or heavy equipment environments, or equivalent education/experience combination.
Ability to safely lift over 100lbs.
Personal hand tools required for regular maintenance tasks.
Knowledge and Skills:
Proficiency in using tools, procedures, and technical skills for maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered equipment.
Strong written and verbal communication and customer service skills.
Problem-solving abilities and a solution-oriented mindset.
Familiarity with Federal and State regulations.
Knowledge of motorized gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fueled vehicles, as well as shop equipment and tools.
Ability to schedule and prioritize work tasks effectively.
Skill in inspecting equipment and diagnosing mechanical defects.
ASE Certification(s) is a plus.
